Join us for an incredible evening of music from the great instrumentalists Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, Maihar gharana, and more! Presented by vocalist GAAYATRI, Neelamjit Dhillon on tabla, Amol Ghode on Pakhawaj, and Makheer Singh on Dilruba.

*Appearing through an Agreement between this theatre, Sierra Madre Playhouse, and Actors' Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the United States.

The program will feature a never before presented showcase of the vocal music of the Rampur-Maihar Senia gharana. While the Maihar tradition is most famous for its renowned legacy of master instrumentalists such as Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Pandit Ravi Shankar, the tradition carries a rich tradition of vocal music dating at least as far back as the 15th century. The last known pure vocalists of this tradition were Mian Tansen and his daughter Saraswati from the 15th century. Over time the music has been stewarded by the great instrumentalists of the Maihar tradition, and passed down generation to generation. After 7 generations, GAAYATRI is the first pure vocalist of the style having trained with Ustad Ali Akbar Khan since the age of 4. She will be presenting a selection of music in every style of Hindustani music - including ancient Vedic era Dhrupad and  Dhammar featuring Amol Ghode on the ancient Pakhawaj double sided barrel drum, later era Khyaal repertoire accompanied by Neelamjit Dhillon on Tabla and Makheer Singh on Dilruba, and light classical pieces all never-before-heard from the Maihar tradition.
