About
This fall, Sierra Madre Playhouse is thrilled to present a unique collaboration that blends the rhythmic traditions of Japan and Indonesia in an extraordinary musical fusion. Los Angeles-based TAIKOPROJECT, the first American taiko group to win the prestigious Tokyo International Taiko Contest, will join forces with Gamelan Merdu Kumala for two unforgettable performances. Together, these two celebrated ensembles aim to create a new musical bridge between their rich cultural heritages, bringing the vibrant sounds of taiko drumming and gamelan music to life in a way that transcends boundaries and unites audiences.
TAIKOPROJECT, founded in 2000 by visionary taiko drummers Bryan Yamami and Masato Baba, has continuously pushed the boundaries of traditional taiko. With a modern American style that blends time-honored rhythms with innovative and fresh aesthetics, TAIKOPROJECT has captivated audiences worldwide. Their groundbreaking win at the Tokyo International Taiko Contest in 2005 marked them as pioneers in the taiko community, and they have since performed at prestigious events such as the Academy Awards, the Grammy Awards, and with global superstars like Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys.
Gamelan Merdu Kumala, founded in 2014 by Hirotaka Inuzuka, is a grassroots organization based in Tujunga, California, that is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich tradition of Balinese gamelan music. This community-driven ensemble offers classes, workshops, and performances to foster a deep connection with the music and create a shared experience of cultural unity. Their mission is to cultivate a safe and welcoming environment for learning and self-expression while remaining true to the authentic sounds of Southern California.
This collaboration between TAIKOPROJECT and Gamelan Merdu Kumala is more than just a performance—it's a celebration of cultural exchange and the power of music to bring people together. The two groups will perform a new piece composed by Masato Baba, inspired by the intricate melodies and rhythms of Balinese gamelan. In addition, they will explore the shared tradition of vocalizing rhythms, using it as a creative starting point for their joint performance.
The partnership between these two distinctive ensembles is a testament to the beauty of cross-cultural collaboration, and it promises to be an inspiring and uplifting experience for all who attend. Don’t miss this chance to witness the merging of Japanese taiko and Indonesian gamelan in a concert that celebrates diversity, creativity, and the universal language of music.
