- Sierra Madre Playhouse
Four Chinese-American mothers, four American-born daughters, and the rich complexities of family ties and history as the eight women reach across a seemingly unbridgeable divide.
Located in the San Gabriel Valley, the Sierra Madre Playhouse, draws from the rich cultural traditions of local residents. Over some forty theatrical seasons, experience tells us that audience members' own stories enrich and expand the work on stage. This is a dialog between actor and audience member that makes theater such an enduring artistic tradition. We are anxious to offer The Joy Luck Club to the Chinese and Chinese-American residents of our community, in particular, yet equally, every audience member representing other cultural roots to join in its universal wisdom.
We are thrilled that Tim Dang returns to direct THE JOY LUCK CLUB at Sierra Madre Playhouse. Having previously run East West Players, the longest running theater of color in the United States and the largest producer of Asian American artistic work, he continues to share the rich cultural experience of the Chinese in America with the greater community that is vital to his work as a director as well as a long-time activist in cultural equity and inclusion.
“Blending hilarity and heartbreak, the play has moments both side-splitting and shattering.” -- L.A. Times
