Expect a romance that begins as protection and turns into something bigger, the kind that makes a whole room go quiet.
In this 1927 silent film, Chico is a Paris sewer worker with big dreams, and Diane is a young woman escaping an abusive home. They find each other, and then World War I gets in the way. Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell star, and director Frank Borzage tells the story almost entirely through faces and light, so you'll notice how much the actors say without speaking. Piano accompaniment by Larry Garf, with a discussion from Rich Procter.
It's a love story told with pictures, and it still lands a hundred years later.
If this one gets you, come back in September for Sunrise, also starring Janet Gaynor, from the director who taught Borzage this way of filmmaking.
