This is a night about a voice with a lot of history behind it. Singer Valerie Geason, known as MzVal, sang with Ray Charles's Raelettes before starting her own group. Her singing draws on Nina Simone, Dinah Washington, and Sarah Vaughan, and her songs are built from her own life. Greg Porée plays guitar in her five-person group. If you grew up with old soul records, this is a chance to hear the singer behind some of that sound.
