A friendship can change how a person understands their country and their responsibility to it. Rosie Narasaki's When Yuri Met Malcolm follows Yuri Kochiyama from wartime incarceration to a lifetime of political engagement, through her relationship with Malcolm X. Directed by Khalif J. Gillett for East West Players' touring production, the play asks questions about citizenship, racism, friendship, and change that speak across generations.
