PATSY

Kailani, an 18-year-old star athlete at Maui High School, anxiously awaits news of her college acceptance when she is visited by the spirit of Patsy Mink, the first Asian-American congresswoman and a former Maui High valedictorian. As Mink shares the trials and triumphs of her groundbreaking political career, Kailani gains valuable lessons about overcoming setbacks and embracing perseverance. This heartwarming play celebrates the strength of young women and the enduring legacy of a true trailblazer.
EAST WIND FOUNDATION

A vibrant cultural celebration will feature a live Lion Dance performance by the renowned East Wind Foundation, a Chinatown-based organization empowering at-risk youth through martial and performance arts. Following the performance, BBMT will host a hands-on dragon puppet-building workshop for all ages, where participants can create their own puppets and learn to perform alongside the professionals. This event offers families a unique chance to explore creativity, culture, and community in an interactive and engaging way.
THE CURSE OF QUON GWON

This silent film directed by Marion E. Wong in 1916 is the earliest known Chinese American feature film and one of the first American films directed by a woman. Accompanied by live piano, the film tells a poignant story of cultural conflict within a Chinese-American family as they navigate Westernization and traditional values. Long thought lost, only two reels of this groundbreaking film survived and were restored in 2005, earning a place in the National Film Registry for its historical and cultural significance. This is a rare opportunity to experience a significant piece of early Asian American filmmaking.
LUNAR HARMONIES

This concert by the Asia / America New Music Institute (AANMI) features compositions inspired by the Moon. With works by Chad Cannon from Los Angeles, SunYoung Sunny Park from Korea, and Angel Lam from Hong Kong and New York, the event explores the intersections of Asian and American cultures through music. AANMI promotes cultural exchange through performances that connect traditions, narratives, and contemporary experiences from both regions. This evening promises evocative and immersive musical storytelling, celebrating the beauty of the Lunar New Year.

As we welcome the Year of the Snake, the performance weaves together stories of renewal, hope, and prosperity, drawing on the diverse influences of our Filipino and Filipino American heritage. Enjoy a fusion featuring lively folk dances, time honored traditions, and exuberant interpretations that reflect the festive spirit of the season of unity and abundance. Celebrate with Kayamanan Ng Lahi as we honor our roots and look forward to new beginnings, all through the expressive language of dance!

Jazz drummer and composer Eric Ching brings his deeply creative approach to the stage for a dynamic evening of music. Currently based in Los Angeles, Eric’s performances blend color and rhythm with a sense of exploration, inspired by jazz legends like McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, and Kenny Garrett. His compositions unfold with a searching quality, filled with unexpected twists and musical narratives reminiscent of a Tarantino film. Having studied under Akira Tana in the Bay Area and honed his skills at New York University, Eric has collaborated with celebrated artists across the jazz and blues scenes, promising a night of innovative drumming and captivating musical storytelling.
